HIGBEE BEACH, NJ

From: richard@West.Sun.COM (Richard M. Mathews)

HIGBEE BEACH is on Cape May at the south end of New Jersey. It is a
fairly narrow beach; the sand is a bit pebbley; and being on the bay,
there's no surf. Unlike Assateague, though, it's easy to get to and
hassle-free (except for the closed parking log, see below). Unlike
Sandy Hook (See SANDY HOOK, NJ), it was not at all crowded, though
there were quite a few people there. Very nice, especially if you're
more interested in sunning than swimming.

To get there, take route 9 north from the Cape May end of the Cape
May-Lewes ferry or south from most of NJ. Take county route 626 (the
first light north of the ferry) east over a bridge across the canal
to county route 641. You will see a sign for Higbee's beach wildlife
management area. If you turn right and follow it to the end, you will
come to the Higbee parking lot which has unfortunately been closed. Some
park on the street despite the no parking signs. If you do park here,
the CO beach begins about 100 yards to the left of where you reach the
  beach.

Alternately, stay on route 626 until route 606, Sunset road. Turn
right and follow this to its end at Sunset Beach. Go onto the beach
and turn right. Not far down the beach you will cross some pilings
and a drainage pipe of some sort. Walk about 100-150 yds farther down
the beach until you pass a second set of pilings. You're there.
